Cincinnati led the pack by collecting three of the Conference’s weekly awards with Hunter Gubeno (men’s swimmer), Ramez Diaa (men’s diver) and Joleigh Crye (women’s swimmer) earning recognition. Arizona State’s Tolu Young (men’s newcomer), Houston’s Lottie Cullen (women’s newcomer) and Kansas’ Shiyun Lai (women’s diver) rounded out the second week of the Conference’s weekly awards voted on by the league’s coaches.
Gubeno made his season debut and won three individual events in the Bearcats’ meet against Oakland. The graduate student finished first in the 200 free (1:39.75), 200 back (1:45.36) and 50 free (20.64) and added a runner-up finish as a part of Cincinnati’s 200 medley A relay. It is his first award this season and second career Conference accolade.
Crye won two individual events and added another top-place finish with the Bearcats’ 200 medley A relay (1:40.33). The junior from Avon, N.Y. clocked times of 1:02.18 in the 100 breast and 55.37 in the 100 fly. It is the second weekly Conference award of her career.
Diaa made his Bearcat debut and tallied two top 2 finishes. The freshman took the top spot on the 3-meter dive with a NCAA zone score of 348.15 and finished runner-up with another NCAA zone score on the 1-meter dive (303.40). He is the second Bearcat to earn the Big 12 Diver of the Week distinction joining Will Claus.
Lai swept the diving events in Kansas’ dual meet against Illinois. The 2024 Big 12 Championship’s Women’s Diving Newcomer of the Meet finished with a score of 327.83 in the 3-meter diving event before completing the sweep with 302.93 performance on the 1-meter. It is the sophomore’s third weekly award of her career and first this season.
Young became the second consecutive Sun Devil to be named the Big 12 Men’s Newcomer of the Week for the 2024 season. The freshman amassed a gold, silver and bronze in his second career meet. Young helped ASU to the fastest time in the 200 free relay (1:16.79; 19.64 split) before finishing runner-up in the 50 free (19.89) and third in the 50 fly (21.48).
Cullen took home the first Conference weekly award for Houston in the 2024-25 season with her meet against Rice and Little Rock. The freshman from Belfast, Northern Ireland highlighted her performance with the seventh-fastest time in program history to win the 100 back (54.50). She added a runner-up finish in the 200 back (1:59.92) to complete her individual races. Cullen also helped the Cougars to two relay wins in the 200 medley (1:43.34) and 400 medley relays (3:43.59) and a runner-up result in the 200 free relay (1:35.71).
