HOCKLEY, Texas- BYU defeated Baylor 4-1 in the final match of the Big 12 Men’s Golf Match Play Tournament, held at Houston Oaks Country Club & Retreat. It is the Cougars’ first title in two tries at the event.
Tyson Shelley led the Cougars on the par 71, 7,007-yard layout with a perfect 5-0-0 record, including a 4 and 3 win in the final match. Peter Kim used a birdie on No. 18 to win 2 up, Cole Ponich won his match 3 and 2 while Simon Kwon completed his match 2 and 1 to account for the BYU points. Jonas Appel won the 18
th hole to take a 1 up victory for Baylor’s point in the match.
Arizona State defeated Kansas 3-2 to finish third in the event held at the Chet Williams-designed course. Oklahoma State won the fifth-place match 2-1-2 over Texas Tech and Utah defeated Cincinnati 3-1-1 for seventh. Iowa State clipped K-State on a hole differential tiebreaker after a 2-2-1 tie, Houston won 3-1-1 over TCU and West Virginia got by Colorado 3-2 in a match that had four pairings reach the 18
th hole.
