BYU, UT, WVU Collect Big 12 Event Titles on Day Three of Swimming & Diving Championship

Texas continues in the lead after the third day of the Big 12 Swimming & Diving Championship as the men’s team has accumulated 1,231 points while the women total 1,076.

UT’s Hailey Hernandez won the first gold medal of Thursday’s finals session and her third consecutive 1-meter diving crown as she finished with 358.35 points. Kansas Shiyun Lai (340.45) took the silver with her first career Big 12 medal followed by TCU’s Anna Kwong with the bronze (336.80).

The women kicked off the swimming finals with the 100 fly as Emma Sticklen (50.61) became the ninth Longhorn to win the event since 2013 as she edged out her teammate and the three-time defending champion Olivia Bray, who took the silver (50.80). Ava Longi (Texas) rounded out the podium with bronze after a 52.28 second performance.

BYU’s Jordan Tiffany earned the first gold medal of the night on the men’s side as well as the first gold medal of the meet for the Cougars as he clocked a winning time of 45.58 in the 100 fly. Texas’ Cole Crane grabbed the runner-up placement in 46.38 seconds before Tanner Edwards touched in 46.48 seconds to give BYU its first event with multiple medal winners.

In the women’s 400 IM, Texas’ Campbell Stoll grabbed the first medal with an NCAA B-cut time of 4:07.14 and was joined by teammates Alicia Wilson (4:09.04) and Angie Coe (4:09.38) who finished in second and third, respectively.

West Virginia’s Danny Berlitz took the men’s 400 IM (3:43.02) to become the first Mountaineer in program history to earn the Big 12 title in the event as well as just the 10th swimmer in program history to win an individual Conference title. Teammate Ivan Puskovitch solidified the 1-2 finish for WVU as he touched in 3:37.61 and gave the Mountaineers their first double-medal event of the Championship. Texas’ Alec Enyeart rounded out the top-three finishers with the bronze in 3:47.74.

After winning the 200 IM on Wednesday, Texas’ Kelly Pash added another gold, this time in the 200 free. Pash finished in a time of 1:42.97 to lead a trio of NCAA B-cut times on the medal stand.  Erin Gemmell grabbed the silver in 1:44.34 while Erica Sullivan finished in 1:46.39 for bronze to complete the podium sweep for the Longhorns.

Texas’ Coby Carozza earned his second medal of the meet as he clocked a winning time of 1:32.63 in the men’s 200 free to keep the crown in Longhorn possession. Nate Germonprez (second) and Camden Taylor each garnered their second career Big 12 medals as the Texas freshmen finished in 1:33.00 and 1:33.90, respectively.

Texas’ diving trio of Noah Duperre (446.80), Brendan McCourt (411.80) and Tanner Braunton (410.10) swept the podium for the Longhorns for the 10th time in the first three days on the men’s 3-meter dive. It was Duperre’s first career Big 12 crown in the event.

The night ended with the men’s and women’s 400 yard medley relays. In the women’s Championship final, Texas (Bray, Anna Elendt, Sticklen, Pash) cruised to a six-second victory and an NCAA A-cut time of 3:27.18. Cincinnati’s relay consisting of Lily Jones, Joleigh Crye, Grace Gavin and Jessica Davis secured the Bearcats’ highest placement yet with the silver in 3:33.89. TCU’s Tania Quaglieri, Nina Vadovicova, Jeanne Dahmen and Olivia Rhodes completed the women’s awards with the bronze in 3:37.27.

In the last event of the night, Texas’ Will Modglin, Will Scholtz, Crane and Alec Filipovic turned in an NCAA A-cut time of 3:04.04 to win the men’s 400 medley relay. TCU’s Edgar Cicanci, Jadon Wuilliez, Piotr Sadlowski and Raphael Paiva Da Lima grabbed the silver (3:07.77) followed by Cincinnati’s group of Hunter Gubeno, Reed Lucero, Drew Hawthorne and Jon Osa in third (3:10.43).

The top four individuals in each event are awarded All-Big 12 first team designation. The fifth-eighth place finishers are All-Big 12 second team. Full results can be viewed here.

Competition will resume on Friday with prelims at 9 a.m. CT, followed by finals starting at 5 p.m. CT. Both prelims and finals will be aired on Big 12 Now on ESPN+.
