ARIZ, BYU, UC and TCU Earn Big 12 S&D Weekly Awards

Arizona’s Haakon Naughton (men’s swimmer), Gage DuBois (men’s diver), Brooke Earley (women’s co-diver) and Kayman Neal (women’s newcomer) were joined by BYU’s Peter Etzold (men’s newcomer), Cincinnati’s Joleigh Crye (women’s swimmer) and TCU’s Anna Kwong (women’s co-diver) as the Big 12 Swimming and Diving weekly awards recipients for meets ending on Sunday, Jan. 19.

Naughton helped the Wildcats defeat No. 24 Minnesota by sweeping the butterfly events. The Lakeville, Minnesota native clocked a time of 1:42.62 in the 200 butterfly before pacing the 100 fly in 45.99, just .72 seconds shy of his personal best. Both efforts qualified as NCAA “B” times. The junior added a gold medal as a member of Arizona’s 400 medley relay. He is the second Wildcat to earn the Big 12 Men’s Swimmer of the Week award this season.

Crye stacked three individual wins and a runner-up finish in the Bearcats’ meets against Kentucky and Xavier. Against the Musketeers, the Avon, N.Y. native finished second in the 50 free (23.88) before claiming the 100 butterfly event title with a time of 55.72. She then snagged gold medals in the 100 butterfly (53.44) and 100 breaststroke (59.24) against Kentucky to end her weekend. This is her third Conference weekly award this season.

DuBois led Arizona’s men’s diving team with two podium finishes against the nationally ranked Gophers. The junior accentuated his weekend with a 332.70 performance on the 1-meter dive, 24 points higher than the runner-up. He added a bronze medal on the 3-meter dive to conclude his weekend. This is his fourth Conference award this season.

Earley led the Wildcats with 13 points for the meet against the No. 23 Golden Gophers. In her last home meet, the senior ended at the top of the scoreboard in the 1-meter dive event (303.15) and second in the 3-meter dive (310.73). It is her second Conference weekly award of the season.

Kwong took home three gold medals in the Horned Frog’s double-header senior weekend. The senior broke the 400-point barrier in both 3-meter diving events and set a school record with a score of 415.28, shattering her previous school record of 369.75, to win the event in both meets. She tacked on a first-place finish against UIW (314.7) and a second-place result against Iowa State (282.68) in the 1-meter dive event. All four scores qualified for zone cut scores and secured her fourth Conference award this season and the 10th of her career.

Etzold contributed three wins in BYU’s win over Denver with two of them coming in individual events. The freshman swept the breaststroke events with times of 54.12 and 1:59.47 in the 100 breaststroke and 200 breaststroke events, respectively. He added another top finish with the 200 medley relay (1:26.64; 24.23 split).

Neal capped her weekend with three podium finishes in the 100 butterfly, 100 backstroke and 200 backstroke against Minnesota. With her gold-medal winning 200 backstroke time of 1:56.58, she secured the best time of the season for Arizona as well as an NCAA “B” cut time.
