Arizona State accumulated four weekly honors with Jonny Kulow (men’s swimmer), Lucien Vergnes (men’s newcomer), Caroline Bentz (women’s co-swimmer) and Julia Ullmann (women’s newcomer) being joined by Arizona’s Paige Armstrong (women’s co-swimmer), Kansas’ Shiyun Lai (women’s diver) and Utah’s Elias Petersen (men’s diver) as the winners of the Big 12 weekly swimming and diving awards by a vote by league coaches.
Kulow became the third Sun Devil to earn Big 12 Men’s Swimmer of the Week honors after four gold medals against Arizona. He was one of two swimmers to swim a sub-19 second time in the 50 freestyle as he clocked a time of 18.90 and added another event title in the 100 freestyle (41.66). The junior from Lander, Wyoming also contributed to two ASU relay wins as the anchor leg in the 200 freestyle relay (1:14.38) and 200 medley relay (1:21.88).
Bentz earned a share of her fifth Big 12 Women’s Swimmer of the Week with her performance in ASU’s dual meet against its in-state rival Wildcats. The graduate student won the 50 freestyle (22.01) and 100 freestyle (48.69) for individual titles and helped the Sun Devils win the 200 medley relay (1:36.36) with a 21.57 freestyle leg split. She added a runner-up finish with ASU’s 200 freestyle relay (1:28.26) to conclude her meet.
Armstrong collected the first Big 12 Women’s Swimmer of the Week award for Arizona this season. The St. Charles, Illinois native touched the wall in a personal-best time of 52.89 in the 100 backstroke to secure the fastest time this year by a Wildcat and win the event. She added two runner-up finishes in the 200 backstroke (1:56.96) and the 200 medley relay (1:37.44).
Petersen swept the 1-meter and 3-meter dive in the Utes dual meet against BYU. The third-year Ute broke the 1-meter pool and program record with a score of 411.45, over 73 points ahead of the runner-up. He followed that up with a score of 416.60 on the 3-meter dive, over 50 points ahead of second place. It is his third Conference award this season.
Lai collected her fifth Big 12 Women’s Diver of the Week accolade this season after leading the Jayhawks to a win over Iowa State. The second-year diver set a Robinson Natatorium pool record with a score of 336.30. She added a top score of 401.18 on the 3-meter dive to end her meet.
Vergnes placed in the top three in all four events he competed in. In his individual events, the freshman earned runner-up in the 100 breaststroke (52.63) and 200 breaststroke (1:54.31). He assisted ASU to a win in the 200 medley relay with a 21.11-second leadoff backstroke leg before culminating his events with a third-place result in the 200 freestyle relay (1:18.55, 19.73 split).
Ullmann rounded out the weekly awards with her third Conference accolade of the year. In the 100 fly, she won by more than 1.5 seconds (51.91) and added another gold as a part of Arizona State’s 200 medley relay (1:36.36). She added a runner-up finish as a member of the 200 freestyle relay (1:28.26) and was the first freshman to touch in the 50 free (22.74) to finish fourth overall.
