For the first time in Conference history, the Big 12 Women’s Golf Championship went to a playoff, as Arizona proved victorious over Arizona State and Oklahoma State to clinch the school’s first Big 12 team title.
Kansas State’s Sophie Bert captured the individual Big 12 title, finishing as the only player under par with a 2-under 212. The senior from Belgium woke up in a tie for 14
th place and was five strokes off the 36-hole lead before firing a final-round 66, which matched the best round of the day and tied the Big 12 Championship record for a final round. She is the first K-State golfer to win medalist honors at the Big 12 Championship.
Arizona’s final round was highlighted by an even-par 71 from Nena Wongthanavimok, who tied for second on the individual leaderboard. The Wildcats posted a cumulative score of 20 on the five-hole shotgun playoff at Houston Oaks Golf Club and Retreat, beating out Arizona State by a stroke. Arizona, Arizona State and Oklahoma State all tied at +19, followed by fourth-place TCU at +20 and fifth-place K-State at +25.
The top 10 and ties received Big 12 All-Tournament Team recognition. Arizona’s Wongthanavimok, Arizona State’s Beth Coulter and K-State’s Carla Bernat tied for second at even par at the 6,393-yard Chet Williams design. Oklahoma State’s Grace Kilcrease, and Marta Silchenko plus the Iowa State duo of Karisa Chul-Ak-Sorn and Pimkwan Chookaew tied for fifth at +3. ASU’s Paula Schulz-Hansen finished ninth, one stroke ahead of the tie at +5 for 10
th between Charlotte Back (Arizona), Pimpisa Sisutham (UCF), Natalie Saint Germain (Houston) and Sofia Barrosa Sá (TCU).
Arizona receives the Big 12’s automatic bid to NCAA Regionals (May 6-8), while Bert would be guaranteed a spot as an individual should K-State not be selected as a team.
