BU’s Govan and TTU Canaday Claim Big 12 Softball Weekly Awards

Baylor’s Shaylon Govan was named Big 12 Softball’s Player of the Week, while Texas Tech’s NiJaree Canady earned Pitcher of the Week during the softball season’s ninth week of action.

Govan helped the Bears pick up a road series sweep at Houston, outscoring the Cougars 21-10 during the three games. In her seven at-bats, she recorded four hits, four RBI and two runs. The Katy, Texas native hit her sixth home run of the season and tallied an RBI as BU claimed a 2-1 win in the series’ final game. Govan has posted an 18-game on-base streak, which has helped her lead the league with a .602 on-base percentage. This is her second Big 12 softball weekly honor and her first since the 2023 season.

Canady pitched a combined 17.0 innings in all three league games against Utah, adding three wins to her pitching record. The junior only allowed one earned run in the first inning of the series opener but then held all other batters scoreless for 16 innings. She finished the weekend with 22 strikeouts, a 0.41 ERA and a 0.59 WHIP. Known for her pitching, she also stepped outside of the circle and batted in the non-conference game against Abilene Christian and in the final game against Utah. This is her second Big 12 softball award of the season.
