Big 12 Record Six Programs Advance Through NCAA Women’s Golf Regionals

Six Big 12 women’s golf programs survived NCAA Regionals, and advanced to the NCAA Championships, held May 16-21 at Omni La Costa Resort and Spa in Carlsbad, California. The six teams at the Championship break the Big 12 record, previously set with five in 2023. Two Big 12 individuals captured medalist honors, and another two advanced to La Costa as the top individuals not on an advancing team.

Kansas won the Columbus (Ohio) Regional, going six under par to win the event by three strokes, to advance to the NCAA Championship for the first time since 2014. Sophomore Lyla Louderbaugh became the first Jayhawk to win an NCAA Regional, shooting under par each day at the Scarlet Course at OSU Golf Club to finish with an eight-stroke victory at -12.

Arizona State and Oklahoma State each scaled Superstition Mountain Golf Club to punch their tickets. The Sun Devils posted a 3-under score at the Gold Canyon (Ariz.) Regional to finish second, while the Cowgirls were 2-over in third place. ASU’s Patience Rhodes signed three under-par scorecards to finish second at -9. Oklahoma State’s Grace Kilcrease tied for third with ASU’s Isla McDonald-O’Brien at -3. It marks the fifth consecutive berth for Oklahoma State at the final site, and the seventh berth in eight seasons for Arizona State.

For the first time in program history, Kansas State will advance to the finals site after tying for second at the Lexington (Ky.) Regional. The Wildcats fired a -10 during the 54-hole event, paced by Big 12 Golfer of the Year, Carla Bernat, who captured medalist honors by two strokes. The Castellon, Spain native had three rounds under par to finish at -12 at Keene Trace Golf Club and continue her impressive spring that included a victory at the Augusta National Women’s Amateur.

Iowa State captured one of the five berths to nationals awarded at the Lubbock Regional, which was moved up a day due to weather. ISU finished third and 15 shots ahead of the playoff for fifth place at +10. A trio of Cyclones posted top-10 individual finishes, as 2024 Big 12 Individual Champion Karisa Chul-Ak-Sorn, Pimkwan Chookaew, and Keeley Marx all tied for eighth at +2 at the Rawls Course, helping the Cyclones back to the season’s final event for the first time since 2014.

Baylor advanced for the fifth consecutive time, finishing 12 strokes above the cut line at Jimmie Austin Golf Club in fifth place. With the final round of the Norman (Okla.) Regional suspended due to darkness, the Bears had to wait overnight to be certain that their double-digit lead would hold. Silje Ohma led Baylor with a fourth-place finish and a 5-under final score.

Individually, TCU’s Sofia Barroso Sá advanced from the Lexington Regional, as the top finisher not on an advancing team, finishing fourth with a 6-under 206. Houston's Moa Svedenskiold was the individual who advanced from the Columbus Regional, using three rounds of par-or-better to finish fifth at -2.
