Iowa State leads after Day One of Big 12 OTF Championship

TUCSON, Ariz. – Iowa State leads the men’s and women’s team standings after three scored events of the 2026 Big 12 Outdoor Track and Field Championship presented by Allstate at Arizona’s Drachman Stadium. The Championship began on Thursday and will conclude on Saturday.

Iowa State took the lead in the men’s standings during Thursday’s final event, the men’s 10,000 meters, as three Cyclones finished within the top six spots. K-State sits in second place with 20 points, while Arizona, BYU and Cincinnati round out the top five.

Iowa State leads the women’s standings with 24 points, followed by Oklahoma State (21 points), BYU (17 points), Arizona (11 points), and West Virginia (10 points).

Cincinnati’s Orry Willems won the first medal of the meet in the men’s hammer throw with a personal best of 68.65 meters.

Jett Kinder claimed gold for Arizona in the javelin throw with a toss of 70.02 meters, setting a new personal best in the event.

BYU’s Creed Thompson broke a 46-year-old facility record, clocking a time of 29:22.98 in the men’s 10,000 meters, to claim his first Big 12 title.

Burklie Burton became the first Cowgirl since 2005 to win the women’s hammer throw title with a throw of 67.99 meters.

TCU’s Irene Jepkemboi won the women’s javelin for the third straight year with a toss of 54.44 meters. The junior became the first to achieve this feat in the women’s javelin throw.  

Iowa State’s Mercyline Kirwa ended the day by winning the women’s 10,000 meters in 34:02.42, breaking a 43-year-old facility record.

Friday’s schedule begins at 11 a.m. MST with the final events of the men’s decathlon and women’s heptathlon. Live coverage throughout the day will be broadcast on ESPN+.
