Nebraska Men, Women Lead After Day Two At The Big 12 Outdoor Track and Field Championships

Day Two Results

Manhattan, Kan. - The Nebraska men's (49 points) and women's (45.67) squads take the top spots after day two action at the 2005 Big 12 Outdoor Track and Field Championship at the R.V. Christian Track on the Kansas State campus. The Aggie women are in second (32) while Kansas State (36) is in the runner-up slot on the men's side.

Ashley Selig (Nebraska), the 2005 Indoor Champ in the heptathlon, snatched the outdoor title (5,587 points) today while snapping a 10-year R.V. Christian Track record (Deb Clark, NU, 1985 - 5,545) by 42 points. The junior notched her season-best and tied her personal-best in total points after ending the competition with a first-place finish in the 800-meter run (2:16.62). Teammate and runner-up Sara Jane Baker fell short by 388 points (5,199).

Hans Uldal (Missouri) had a come-from-behind win in the final day of the men's decathlon (7,740) after being in third place at the end of Friday's action. He broke the Tigers' school record and is the fourth in five years to win the multi-event competition. The junior regionally-qualified with a triumph in the javelin throw (203-08) along with placing first in the discus toss (152-05). Friday's leader Donovan Kilmartin (Texas) landed the runner-up spot (7,472).

In the field events, Michelle Carter (Texas) clinched her first Big 12 outdoor title in the women's shot put (56-6 1/2). The top five women in the shot put notched personal best marks. Brian Robison (Texas) threw to a first-time league title (64-7 3/4) for the Longhorns and a personal-best while overcoming league leader Sheldon Battle (Kansas) by almost three inches in a tight battle.

Shattering a Big 12 meet (Dalhia Ingram, NU, 1999 - 21-11) and facility record (Jenny Adams, Nike, 2004 - 21-2 1/4), sophomore Marshevet Hooker (Texas) leaped to a first-ever conference victory for UT in the women's long jump (22-7 1/4). The win was also her first outdoor title and a personal-best mark under all conditions. Lakodron Ivery (Baylor) came in second in her first long jump competition (21-8 1/4) this season while also posting a NCAA regional qualification mark. In addition to Hooker, Ivery and third-place finisher Candice Mills (Kansas State) broke the facility record (21-4 1/4) while fourth-place competitor Charisse Bacchus (Kansas) earned a regional qualifying mark and a personal best (21-0 1/2).

On the men's side, Oliver Koenig (Iowa State) flew to the Cyclones' first-ever gold in the long jump (25-5 1/4) league leader Gable Baldwin (Nebraska) tied his season-best (18-2 1/2) and tied the conference record in the pole vault (Eric Eshbach, NU, 2000). His teammate and 2005 Indoor champion in the event, Ray Scotten, took the runner-up position (17-10 1/2).

In preliminary action in the running events, four Texas Tech men and all three Baylor competitors qualified for tomorrow's 400-meter finals. With Big 12 leader and three-time conference champ Darold Williamson (Baylor) leading the field (46.16), the four Red Raiders (Michael Mathieu, Andrae Williams, Terry Beard, Johnny Jacob) snatched the two, three, four and five slots while the other two Bears (Kevin Mutai, Mark Teter) grabbed the No. 6 and 7 spots. Mark Teter (Texas A&M) rounds out the eight athletes advancing to the finals.

Both Tech women (Shereefa Lloyd, Licretia Sibley) and two of the three BU student-athletes (Angel Perkins, Rena Napoleon) qualified for the 400-meter finals. The 2004 Big 12 winner Jerrika Chapple (Texas) clocked a season-best and top time in the prelims (53.11) while runner-up Shunte Thomas (Kansas State) tabbed a collegiate-best and third-fastest time (53.38) in school history. LaTashia Kerr (Texas) and Rena Napoleon (Baylor) earned season-best marks and a spot in finals action.

Hooker (Texas), who won the long jump earlier, went on to tie a Big 12 record (Nanceen Perry, UT & LaKeisha Backus, UT, 1997 &1998) in her first 200-meter dash competition of the season while earning a regional-qualifying time (22.73) in the prelims. All three Texas (Hooker, Chapple, Kerr) and Baylor women (Liz Wilson, Ivery, Carla Grace) that ran advanced to the finals. On the men's side, Nate Probasco (Nebraska) led the way to a new facility record (Tom Fish, NU, 1996 - 20.67) and season-best in the 200 (20.53) prelims.

In the 100-meter prelims, Dusty Stamer (Nebraska) qualified (10.14) over two-time Big 12 champ DaBryan Blanton (Oklahoma) and set a new meet (Billy Fobbs, A&M, 1997 - 10.19) and facility record (Chidi Imoh, MU, 1985 - 10.16). Lakodron Ivery (Baylor) snapped the facility record (Rosalyn Bryant, Cal State L.A., 1976 - 11.53) in the women's 100 prelim action (11.25).
