LINCOLN, Neb. - The Texas men and women teams swept the Big 12 Indoor Track & Field Championships in the final day of competition at the Bob Devaney Sports Center in Lincoln, Neb. The UT men claimed their second Big 12 team title with 127 points, while the women claimed their fifth title with 125 points.
Earning the individual high point award for the men was Reggie Witherspoon of Baylor with 22.5 points. Reggie won conference titles in the 200-meter dash, 400-meter dash and 4x400-meter relay. For the women, Marshevet Hooker (Texas) was honored with 30 points and won three Big 12 titles, including the long jump, 60-meter dash and 200-meter dash.
For the men, defending Big 12 Heptathlon Champion Donovan Kilmartin (Texas) earned his second title and set a new Big 12 Indoor Meet Record with a score of 5,876 points. In the 60-meter hurdles, Nebraska's Courtney Jones won his first title with a provisional qualifying time of 7.74. Baylor's Jacob Norman claimed his first conference title in the 60-meter dash with a time of 6.66, while defending Big 12 Champion Leonel Manzano (Texas) finished first in the mile run in 4:02.66. Kevin Mutai (Baylor) won his first 600-yard run title in a time of 1:09.73.
High point scorer, Witherspoon, won his first title of the championship with a time of 46.91 in the 400-meter dash. K-State's Christian Smith earned his third consecutive conference title in the 1000-meter run with a time of 2:21, while Dmitrijs Milkevics (Nebraska) placed first in the 800-meter run for the second time in Big 12 Championship history and broke a facility record (1:46.46). In the 200-meter dash, Witherspoon earned the conference title for the first time in 21.11. Rounding out the men's individual competition was defending conference champion Brent Vaughn (Colorado) in the 3000-meter run with a time of 8:04.03.
Baylor edged the competition in the men's 4x400 medley relay to win their ninth consecutive title with a time of 3:08.95. Teammates included Witherspoon, Mutai, Wil Fitts and Quentin Iglehart-Summers.
In the men's field events, Sheldon Battle of Kansas claimed his first Big 12 title in the shot put with a throw of 65-03.25, while defending conference champion Daniel Roper (Nebraska) won the triple jump with a distance of 50-09.05. Andra Manson (Texas) earned his third consecutive title in the high jump with a leap of 7-05.25. Defending Big 12 champion Ray Scotten of Nebraska won the pole vault with a height of 17-09.
For the women, defending Big 12 Champion Pricilla Lopes (Nebraska) earned the All-Time Big 12 Best in the 60-meter hurdles with a time of 7.92. Her automatic qualifying mark is the top in the nation and broke the school and facility record.
Hooker won the women's 60-meter dash for the first time in conference history with a time of 7.22. Oklahoma's Jessica Eldridge claimed her first title in the mile run with a time of 4:47.25, while Dee Dee Cortez (Texas) claimed her first conference title in the 600-yard run (1:20.93). Clora Williams of Texas A&M won the 400-meter dash for the first time at the Big 12 Championships in 53.28. In the 1000-meter run, defending Big 12 Champion Ashley Patten (Missouri) won with a time of 2:49.53 and Althea Chambers (Texas Tech) earned her second conference title in the 800-meter run (2:06.94). Chambers time was a Big 12 Indoor Meet Record and a provisional qualifying mark.
High point winner, Hooker completed the night with a title in the 200-meter dash and an automatic qualifying mark of 23:11. Erin Bedell (Baylor) finished the 3000-meter run in 9:29.94 to claim her the Big 12 title and teammates Angel Perkins, Carla Grace, Lauren Tillman and Kandace Tucker won Baylor's third conference title in the 4x400 medley relay (3:36.22).
In the field events, Yasmine Regis (Texas A&M) earned her first Big 12 title in the triple jump with a distance of 42-06.25 and Nebraska's Becky Breisch won her third title in the shot put (57-06.25). Freshman Destinee Hooker (Texas) set the new NCAA record in the high jump with a height of 6-03.50.
The qualifying athletes will travel to the NCAA Indoor Track & Field Championships in Fayetteville, Ark., March 10-11.
