Lincoln, Neb. - Kansas men and Nebraska women lead after day one of the Big 12 Indoor Track & Field Championships at the Bob Devaney Center in Lincoln, Neb. The Jayhawk men earned 29 points in four events scored, while the Husker women tallied 55.5 points in six events.
For the men, finals took place in the weight throw, long jump, 5,000-meter run and the Distance Medley Relay.
In the field events, Egor Agafonov (Kansas) won his first Big 12 Championship in the weight throw with an automatic qualifying mark of 72-07.75. In the long jump, Artrus Abolins (Nebraska) earned his second conference title with a jump of 25-08.25.
Billy Nelson of Colorado finished first in the 5000-meter run for his first title of his career with a time of 13:54.70.
Texas finished the night with the men's distance medley relay title for the first time since the league began in 1996. UT finished the race with a time of 9:49.59 and the team members iincluded Dylan Wykes, Alan Bean, Tomas Finol and Leonel Manzano.
Finals took place for the women in the weight throw, long jump, pole vault, pentathlon, 5,000-meter run and Distance Medley Relay.
K-State's Laci Heller won her first championship in the weight throw with a provisional qualifying mark of 63-08.25. Returning champion, Marshevet Hooker (Texas) captured her second title and automatic qualifying mark in the long jump with a leap of 20-11.75. NU's Jenny Green won her second championship on the pole vault with a height of 13-05.25.
Returning Big 12 Champion, Ashley Selig (Nebraska) captured her second pentathlon title with a NU record-breaking score of 4,336 points.
Oklahoma captured its first conference title in the women's distance medley relay with a time of 11:18.97. Members Catherine Odell, Tijahnni Newton, Kristi Cook and Jessica Eldridge completed the race in the second fastest time in conference championship history.
The final day of the championship will begin at 9:30 a.m. (CST) with the men's 60-meter hurdles.
