Iowa State Wins 2006 Big 12 Gymnastics Championship

LINCOLN, Neb. - Iowa State captured the 10th annual Big 12 Conference Women's Gymnastics Championship with a final team score of 196.425 points.

It was the second Big 12 title (2000) for the Cyclones ahead of runner-up Nebraska with 196.275 points, Oklahoma at 195.350 and Missouri with 194.850 markers. Nebraska had been seven-time Big 12 team champs from 1997-99, 2001-03, '05 while Oklahoma took team kudos in 2004.

Individual champions included Emily Parsons (Nebraska) in the vault with a 9.900 score along with Vanessa Meloche (Nebraska), Desire Sniatynski (Nebraska), Stephanie LoPiccolo (Oklahoma), and Erin Dethloff (Iowa State) in a four-way tie on the uneven parallel bars at 9.850. Parsons also claimed the balance beam competition with a score of 9.900, while Kacey Oiness (Iowa State) won the floor exercise (9.950). Brittney Koncak-Schumann (Oklahoma) finished first in the all-around results at 39.425.

Saturday's event marked the first time that all four Big 12 gymnastics' squads had entered the meet ranked among the Top 15 nationally by Gyminfo Ratings. ISU was No. 4 prior to the conference finale, and the Cyclones were followed by No. 6 Oklahoma, No. 11 Nebraska, and No. 13 Missouri.

In 2005, the four Big 12 members all qualified for NCAA Regionals. Nebraska earned sixth, Iowa State eighth and Oklahoma 12th at the NCAA Championships at Auburn, Ala. NCAA Regional bids will be announced on March 30, and the national meet will be Apr. 20-22 at Corvallis, Ore. The 2000 and '03 Nebraska teams each finished fourth in the NCAA for the top placements by Big 12 squads since league competition began in 1997.

The top four finishers in each event earned All-Big 12 honors. The conference also announced its Gymnast, Newcomer and Coach of the Year in a vote by Big 12 coaches.
