Buchanan Named Wrestler of the Week

Wyoming’s Stephen Buchanan has been named the Big 12 Wrestler of the Week for week 14. This is the first career Conference honor for the freshman.

Buchanan was a perfect 2-0 last week, picking up a forfeit win over Fresno State and then an 8-6 upset victory over No. 7 Dakota Geer of Oklahoma State in the 197-pound weight class. Buchanan grabbed an early lead in the dual, but then was forced to tie the bout with 12 seconds left in the first period. The two wrestlers traded leads early in the second period, but Buchanan got a late escape with only two seconds left in the matchup to take the dual into the final period tied at five. Geer opened the third period with an escape to take the lead, but just 10 seconds later Buchanan recorded his second takedown of the match and then earned another point off of Geer’s second stall warning to win 8-6.
