UT’s Piperi, TTU’s Nichols Take Week 3 Awards

Texas’ Tripp Piperi was tabbed the Big 12 Indoor Track & Field Men’s Athlete of the Week, while Texas Tech’s Monae’ Nichols earned Women’s Athlete of the Week recognition for Week 3.

Piperi produced a lifetime-best mark of 69’-3.5” (21.12m) in the shot put at the Wooo Pig Classic in Fayetteville, Arkansas. His mark is No. 2 all-time at Texas and extended his NCAA lead to more than one full meter. Piperi’s throw is No. 3 in the world.

Nichols became the fifth Red Raider in the last seven days to take over as world leader in an event. Her mark of 22'-1.75" (6.75m) came on her third jump of the day, establishing a school record and Sports Performance Facility record. In addition to placing her at the top of the world leaderboard, her mark also counted as the 11th-best performance in NCAA history.

This is the third career award for Piperi and first this season. Nichols is a first-time honoree.
