Oklahoma State collected its seventh Big 12 Equestrian Championship title and first since 2018 by edging TCU, 11-9, on Saturday at Baylor’s Willis Family Equestrian Center.
The Cowgirls collected four points in the Fences discipline as Sydney North, Abigail Brayman, Katie Schell and Sydnie Ziegler collected victories. The Horned Frogs then bounced back with three points in the Flat with Ashleigh Scully, Wynne Weatherly and Alex Beneson picking up wins. It was another 3-2 nailbiter in Horsemanship, as OSU edged TCU with points from Harley Huff, Jojo Roberson and Sydnee Gemer.
The matchup came down to the Reining discipline. TCU opened with a three-point edge to tie the contest at 9-9. However, Oklahoma State recorded the final two points from Hannah Lovrien and Molly Mitchell to win the event.
Oklahoma State’s Abigail Brayman was tabbed the Most Outstanding Performer in Fences, while Cowgirl Jojo Roberson won the Horsemanship MOP award. Baylor also took home a pair of MOP honors, as Rachael Davis was honored in the Flat and Madaline Callaway recognized in Reining.
In the consolation match, Baylor outlasted Fresno State, 13-7, to place third in the event. BU swept all four disciplines: Fences (4-1), Flat (3-2), Horsemanship (3-2) and Reining (3-2).
The 2021 Big 12 Equestrian individual awards were also announced. Oklahoma State took home three honors as Schell was tabbed Fences Rider of the Year, Harley Huff shared Horsemanship Rider of the Year honors and Larry Sanchez was named Coach of the Year. The Horsemanship Rider of the Year honor marked the fourth-consecutive award for Huff, while Sanchez picked up his fifth Coach of the Year award since 2013.
TCU’s Jessica McAllister shared Horsemanship Rider of the Year honors, while Mattie Dukes was tabbed the Reining Rider of the Year. Rachael Davis repeated as the Flat Rider of the Year, as it marked the sixth consecutive season a Baylor student-athlete had won that award.
Fresno State and TCU had five honorees each on the All-Big 12 Team, followed by three selections apiece for Baylor and Oklahoma State.
All four Big 12 programs will resume action on April 15-17 at the NCEA National Championship held at the Extraco Events Center in Waco, Texas.
