FORT WORTH
– TCU head men’s golf coach Bill Montigel was named to the Golf Coaches Association of America Hall of Fame on Tuesday.
Now in his 36
th season as head coach, Montigel has molded TCU men’s golf into a model of consistency. The Horned Frogs qualified for 31-straight NCAA Regionals from 1990-2021, a streak only matched by one other program for the longest under the same head coach. As a team under Montigel, TCU advanced to 18 NCAA Championships, finished in the top 20 at those championships 13 times and finished in the top 12 seven times.
Montigel will be officially inducted at the GCAA Hall of Fame Reception and Awards Dinner on Monday, Dec. 5 in Las Vegas, Nev., with Mark Crabtree, David Lynn and Chris Young.
“I’m honored to be going into the hall of fame with such a great group,” said Montigel. “This is really a reward for every person I’ve ever coached and every person I’ve ever coached with. I’ve had the privilege to be around some really great golfers and high-character guys. We’ve had lot of really great players come through our program and they’ve always been supported by the leadership at TCU and the Fort Worth golf community. I also want to thank my family who supports me every day.”
A seven-time conference coach of the year, Montigel led TCU to eight conference titles, including five straight from 2001-2005. The Frogs had seven individual conference champions, including two that won the Big 12.
Montigel has mentored 16 student-athletes to 26 All-America selections, including eight first-team accolades. Under his watch, six Horned Frogs have earned a top 10 finish at the NCAA Championship.
TCU has made a habit of sending golfers on to professional careers with Montigel at the helm. Tom Hoge just had a breakout year on the PGA TOUR with six top 10 finishes and was 10
th in the final FedExCup ranking. J.J. Henry joined the PGA TOUR in 1998 and still competes at PGA events. Paul Barjon earned his TOUR card just last season. Others who have gone on to experience profession success include Colbey Beckstrom, Julien Brun, Franklin Corpening, Bret Guetz, Drew Laning, Adam Meyer, Adam Rubinson, James Sacheck, David Shultz, Sal Spallone and Drew Stoltz.
