ARLINGTON, Texas – No. 7 seed Kansas State took down No. 6 seed West Virginia 8-5 in game six of the Phillips 66 Big 12 Championship at Globe Life Field.
The Wildcats started the scoring off early. In the first inning, a Nick Goodwin double to left-center scored a run from second base. An RBI single from senior Dylan Phillips brought the Kansas State lead to two.
In the second inning, Cash Rugely extended the lead for the Cats to three as he walked with the bases loaded.
West Virginia answered with a three-run third inning. A single from sophomore McGwire Holbrook started the scoring for the Mountaineers. Braden Barry slapped a single to center field plating another run. Dayne Leonard evened the score at three with another base hit through the right side.
After a scoreless fourth inning, senior Justin Mitchell brought the Wildcats back in front with an RBI single.
Kansas State did not stop there. In the sixth inning, Dominic Johnson hit a solo home run to deep left field and Phillips increased the lead with his second RBI single of the game, pushing the lead to 6-3.
In the seventh inning, Rugely walked again with the bases full, continuing the Wildcat lead. After the stretch, the Mountaineers answered with a run of their own following an RBI double from junior Victor Scott.
The Wildcats scratched an insurance run across the board with a sacrifice bunt from Raphael Pelletier in the ninth inning.
West Virginia did not go away quietly, a sacrifice fly from JJ Wetherholt in the bottom of the ninth closed the lead to three, but Kansas State held on to win, 8-5.
Junior Blake Adams (W, 6-6) pitched 6.2 innings giving up six hits and four runs. Adams struck out nine batters for the second time this season. He was relieved by Ty Ruhl who pitched 1.1 innings giving up one run and striking one batter out. Phillips, who started the game at first base, earned his seventh save of the year, pitched one inning and struck out one batter.
Sophomore Ben Hampton (L, 8-5) threw five innings and struck out five. He gave up four runs, six hits and four walks.
The Kansas State Wildcats will move on to play the loser of game eight between No. 2 Texas Tech and No. 3 Oklahoma on Friday at 7 p.m. on Big 12 Now ESPN+.
