The 2022-23 Big 12 Athlete of the Year nominees will be featured each day at 10 a.m. CT and 2 p.m. CT, listed in alphabetical order by school through Friday, July 28.
Each institution nominated one male and one female athlete of any classification that competed for their institution during the school year. Student-athletes were required to be in good academic standing and had to be from a league-sponsored sport.
The 10 schools that competed during the 2022-23 academic year are eligible.
The winners will be announced Monday, July 31. Stay tuned to Big12Sports.com and the league’s social media platforms to see the rest of the candidates.
This morning’s featured candidates are TCU’s Max Duggan and Messiah Bright.
TCU Male Athlete of the Year Candidate
Max Duggan, Football, Quarterback
Sr., Council Bluffs, Iowa
Accomplishments
- Winner of the Davey O’Brien Award, Johnny Unitas Golden Arm Award and Earl Campbell Tyler Rose Award.
- 2022 Heisman Trophy Finalist (Runner-Up).
- Was the Big 12 Offensive Player of the Year and a unanimous First Team All-Big 12 selection.
- Led TCU to its first College Football Playoff appearance and a trip to the CFP National Championship game after a 51-45 semifinal win over Michigan at the Vrbo Fiesta Bowl.
- Inaugural recipient of the Bob Bowlsby Award, given to the two student-athletes (one male and one female) who represent the absolute best in the Big 12 for their leadership and excellence, on and off the field of competition.
- Earned his degree in December 2022 from TCU’s Neeley School of Business.
- A 2022 First Team Academic All-Big 12 selection.

Messiah Bright, Soccer, Forward

Accomplishments
- A 2022 United Soccer Coaches First Team All-Midwest and Second Team All-American.
- Named a 2022 First Team All-Big 12 member.
- Guided TCU to its seventh straight NCAA Tournament and third consecutive Sweet 16.
- Led the Horned Frogs in goals (11), points (26) and was tied for the team lead in assists (4).
- Is TCU’s all-time leader in goals (50) and points (118).
- Was a 2022 Academic All-Big 12 Selection.
