MORGANTOWN, W. VA – Texas’ Kelly Pash and Lydia Jacoby set individual Conference Championship records while Texas’ women’s 200 free relay broke another on the fourth day of the 2024 Big 12 Swimming and Diving Championship at the Aquatic Center at Mylan Park. Texas remains in the lead with 1,538 points in the men’s standings while the women’s team has amassed a total of 1,506.
Pash began the meet with a Big 12 Championship record-breaking time of 1:51.66 in the 200 butterfly, fending off the two-time defending event champion and fellow Longhorn, Emma Sticklen. Sticklen clocked a time of 1:51.68, which also broke the previous record, to take home the silver medal. Texas’ Angie Coe rounded out the medal stand with a time of 1:56.20.
Brad Prolo garnered his first career Big 12 individual title with a time of 1:41.15 in the 200 fly. Texas grabbed the next two medals as freshman Cole Crane grabbed runner-up with a time of 1:42.02 and Ryan Branon Jr. finished in third with a time of 1:43.08.
Jacoby broke the second Big 12 Championship record of the meet as she topped her 2023 meet record in the 100 breast with a time of 57.27, 0.02 seconds faster than the previous mark. Texas’ Anna Elendt, who holds the overall Big 12 record, grabbed the silver just under 0.04 seconds after Jacoby (57.65). Joleigh Crye completed the top three finishers as she grabbed the first medal of the day for the Bearcats.
On the men’s side, Will Scholtz grabbed the gold for Texas in the 100 breast with the top NCAA B-cut time of 52.09. Brayden Taivassalo out-touched third place by just 0.01 seconds to give the pair of freshmen another 1-2 finish for the Longhorns. Jadon Wuilliez came in just after Taivassalo for the bronze in 52.29 to secure his second career Big 12 medal.
In the women’s 100 back, Berit Berglund reclaimed the event title for Texas after WVU won the event in 2023. Berglund clocked a time of 51.72 leading a Texas 1-2-3 finish. Olivia Bray finished with the silver after a 52.00 second swim followed by freshman Emma Kern in 52.26 seconds for the third-place finish.
Texas’ Will Modglin glided to his first individual event crown with a 44.75 performance, almost two seconds ahead of the rest of the heat. Chris O’Connor came in next with a time of 46.41 for another Longhorn silver medal before Cincinnati’s Edgar Cicanci tallied his first career Big 12 medal.
In the lone diving event of the day, Texas’ Jordan Skilken took the women’s platform diving event with a score of 334.90 for her third platform title of her career. Sarah Carruthers grabbed second place with a score of 334.70, to add 28 points to the Longhorn’s women’s meet score. Houston’s Michelle McLeod rounded out the podium for the women’s divers as she grabbed the first individual medal for the Cougars this Championship.
The day ended with the 200 free relays as the Longhorns women’s team (Grace Cooper, Ava Longi, Sticklen, Pash) broke the final Big 12 Championship meet record of the day with a time of 1:26.66, surpassing the record that Pash and Cooper helped set in 2021. TCU’s relay of Olivia Rhodes, Mikayla Popham, Serena Gould and Claire Chahbandour collected the Horned Frog’s first silver relay medal with a time of 1:30.13. Cincinnati grabbed the bronze as Jessica Davis, Kaylee Nagel, Crye and Sonja Aarsvold clocked a time of 1:30.58.
In the final event of the day, all three podium finishers outswam their seed time in a close race. Texas’s Peter Paulus, Camden Taylor, Nate Germonprez and Modglin recorded the lone NCAA B-cut time for the gold. BYU’s Jordan Tiffany, Tanner Edwards, Diego Camacho Salgado and Luigi Riva just missed a B-cut time by 0.32 seconds but finished with the silver medal placement. West Virginia completed the awards with its second bronze medal in a men’s relay this week.
The top four individuals in each event are awarded All-Big 12 first team designation. The fifth-eighth place finishers are All-Big 12 second team. Full results can be viewed
