OU’s Green, UT’s Garrett Garner Big 12 OTF Weekly Awards

Oklahoma’s BJ Green and Texas’ Akala Garrett collected Week 6’s Big 12 Outdoor Track and Field honors after posting top finishes at the Mt. SAC Relays last week. It is the first outdoor honor for the underclassmen while Green was awarded the weekly nod during the 2024 indoor season.

Green claimed the gold medal for his 16.76-meter (55-foot) leap in the men’s triple jump. He registered the mark on his last attempt after he gradually bested his personal record of 16.12m in his last three attempts. En route to his first-place finish, he defeated the current indoor triple jump champion and a two-time Olympian (Russell Robinson and Chris Benard). The sophomore studying electrical engineering has the country’s best mark this season in the triple jump, leading by more than .10 meters.

Garrett won the women’s 100-meter hurdles after running the event in 13.23 seconds and also claimed another victory in the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 55.93 seconds. The freshman interested in communications set personal bests in both events while she became UT’s No. 8 all-time performer in the 400-meter hurdles. Her time in the 400-meter hurdles sits fourth in the nation this season, registering her as the only freshman with a top-20 mark in the event.
