IRVING, Texas — Two Big 12 soccer student-athletes were selected in the 2022 NWSL Draft. Oklahoma State defender Charmé Morgan was picked in the third round as the 16th overall pick by Racing Louisville FC while TCU defender Jenna Winebrenner received the 41st overall pick in the fourth round from the Kansas City Current.
Morgan became the third NWSL Draft pick in Cowgirl Soccer history and joins Melinda Mercado, who was also drafted with the No. 16 overall pick in the third round of the 2012 draft, and AD Franch, a first-round pick (No. 6 overall) of the Western New York Flash in 2013, as NWSL Draft picks from OSU.
A native of Frisco, Texas, Morgan played five seasons in an OSU uniform and was a three-time all-region and two-time All-Big 12 Conference performer. She played in 98 career games, 86 as a starter, and recorded 11 goals and nine assists while leading the Cowgirls to a pair of Big 12 championships.
Winebrenner is also the third Horned Frog to be drafted, joining Ryan Williams (No. 6 to the Portland Thorns in 2018) and Yazmeen Ryan (a fourth round pick by the NC Courage in 2021).
The Notre Dame grad transfer played and started in all of TCU’s matches this season, making an immediate impact in a backline which contributed to a school-record 13 shutouts in 2021. The Horned Frogs allowed just 14 goals all season. TCU ranked ninth nationally in goals against average (0.56). Offensively, the senior contributed a trio of assists.
Winebrenner was named a United Soccer Coaches Association First Team All-Midwest defender and received the Most Outstanding Defensive Player honors in the 2021 Big 12 Soccer Tournament, aiding the Frogs to their first conference tournament title.
