Texas’ Cameron Auchinachie (swimmer of the week) and Luke Hobson (newcomer of the week) collected Big 12 men’s swimming awards this week. Auchinachie captured his first Big 12 honor while Hobson picked up his second newcomer award. TCU’s Alec Hubbard earned his first weekly honor, procuring diver of the week.
On the women’s side, Texas’ Anna Elendt took home swimmer of the week for the second time while teammate Channing Hanley is bestowed with her first newcomer of the week award. TCU’s Anna Kwong obtained her first diver of the week honor.
Auchinachie began the weekend winning the 50-yard backstroke (50.63) and setting the Texas program record. The Binghamton, N.Y. native posted the fastest 50 free times in the NCAA this season, swimming 18.94 in the prelims, then winning the final in 18.80 and is the first swimmer in the NCAA this season to record times under 19 seconds. The graduate student was a part of four-relay-winning teams for the No. 1 Longhorns at the 2021 Minnesota Invitational that set NCAA-leading times in all four events against three nationally-ranked opponents (No. 3 Cal, No. 4 Michigan and No. 17 Wisconsin). The 400 medley relay (3:02.48) and the 400-yard freestyle relay (2:46.46) were both NCAA-A qualifying times and the top marks in the NCAA this season. He was also a part of the 200-yard medley relay team (1:22.33) that finished first. Auchinachie capped the weekend with a win in the 100-yard backstroke with his time of 45.01.
Hubbard notched an NCAA Zone cut on the 3-meter with a score of 330.70 in the prelims at the Big Al Invitational and finished sixth with his score of 305.70. The freshman finished eighth overall on the 1-meter with his score of 283.15 and he had a sixth-place finish in platform with a score of 297.00.
Hobson broke Michael Phelps’ 17-18 national age group record (4:12.33) in the 500-yard freestyle in the prelims (4:12.12), then broke his own record in the final (4:09.72) marking the fastest time in the NCAA this season. The freshman was a part of the Texas B relay team that finished third in the 800-yard freestyle relay with a time of 6:11.72, meeting the NCAA-B-standard. The native of Reno, Nevada hit another NCAA-B standard time in the 200 freestyle at 1:33.18. Hobson hit his final NCAA-B standard time and set a pool-record time, winning the 1650-yard freestyle with his time of 14:40.15.
Elendt helped the No. 2 Longhorns capture the 200-yard medley relay with a UT program-record time of 1:32.46 which was an NCAA-A qualifying time and ranks as the second-fastest time in the NCAA this season. The sophomore finished second in the 400-yard medley relay with her time of 3:27.53 which ranks as the fifth-fastest time in the NCAA this year. She swept the two sprint breaststroke events, winning the 100-yard breaststroke with a time of 57.90, breaking the Texas program record and placing fourth on the NCAA list this season. Her winning time in the 200 breaststroke ranks as the fifth-fastest time this season (2:06.21).
Kwong notched her second Zone cut of the season with a score of 267.05 on 1-meter, finishing fifth overall. The freshman also finished 15
th in platform with a score of 191.40.
Hanley posted two NCAA-B qualifying times at the Minnesota Invitational which featured three other ranked teams (No. 4 Michigan, No. California and No. 19 Wisconsin). The freshman finished second in the B-final of the 100-yard breaststroke with her time of 1:01.34 and followed up with her second NCAA-B standard time in the 200-breaststroke at 2:12.83. Hanley added a time of 2:01.71 in the 200 IM and helped the Texas C Relay team finish with a time of 3:38.79 in the 400-yard medley relay.
