K-State’s Ioana Gheorghita and Oklahoma’s Ivana Corley are Big 12 Women’s Tennis Co-Players of the Week, while OU’s Mason Beiler and TCU’s Luc Fomba shared the men’s honor for Week 12.

OU’s Corley, the No. 91 singles player in the nation, upset No. 53 Alana Wolfberg of rival Oklahoma State, while battling No. 85 Evgeniya Levashova in an unfinished contest as the Sooners took down No. 16 UCF. In doubles, paired with sister Carmen, the Corleys defeated the No. 55 ranked duo from Oklahoma State and the 30th-ranked pair from UCF, giving the Sooner junior three ranked victories on the weekend.

KSU’s Gheorghita helped the unranked Wildcats turn in wins over Sunflower State rival and No. 44 Kansas for the first time since 2014, while also taking down No. 49 Tulsa earlier in the week. The sophomore from Ploiesti, Romania won a three-set battle on the 6 court in the win over the Golden Hurricane, and another three-set thriller over KU’s Tiffany Lagarde on the 5 court in the upset of the Jayhawks.  

TCU’s Fomba had the standout performance of the No. 8 Horned Frogs’ win over No. 7 Texas in Austin on the No. 1 courts. In singles, Fomba came back from an opening set loss to UT’s Eliot Spizzirri to win the next two in a dazzling performance once all other courts were cleared and the team match tied 3-3. In a third set tiebreaker, the sophomore from Plaisir, France won seven straight points to clinch the court and the win over the Horns. Fomba also paired with Alastair Gray in No. 1 doubles for a 6-4 win over UT’s No. 12 tandem of Spizzirri and Woldeab.

The Sooners’ Beiler, the No. 111 ranked player in the country, upset the No. 9 player in straight sets, and earned another straight-set victory as OU defeated No. 21 Texas Tech. From the No. 2 court, Bailer took down the Red Raiders’ Ilgiz Valiev on Thursday, as the Sooners claimed a 6-1 team win as well. Then on Saturday, the junior from New Port Richey, Florida ousted No. 9 Matias Soto, 7-5, 6-2, the highest ranked victory of his career.
