ARLINGTON, Texas – No. 5 Texas (41-17) defeated No. 1 TCU (36-19) 5-3 in game seven of the 2022 Phillips 66 Big 12 Championship at Globe Life Field. UT has started 2-0 at the Big 12 Championship for the first time since 2017.
The Longhorns jumped out to an early lead with a three-RBI home run from Murphy Stehly.
The Horned Frogs scored their first run when an error brought in Tommy Sacco to get TCU on the board.
After a scoreless fifth inning, Brayden Taylor brought in a run with a sacrifice fly that scored Elijah Nunez, pulling the Horned Frogs within one.
At the top of the eighth, a balk extended Texas’ lead to 4-2. Eric Kennedy scored on Austin Todd’s single to further the Longhorn lead to 5-2.
TCU's Gray Rodgers homered to right field in the bottom of the ninth to cut the lead to 5-3, but Tristan Stevens was able to secure Texas' victory.
Sophomore Lucas Gordon (W, 7-1) pitched 7.2 innings for UT. He fanned four batters while giving up two hits and two runs, one unearned, before being relieved by freshman Luke Harrison. Stevens earned the save striking three batters out while giving up one hit and one run.
Junior Marcelo Perez (L, 6-3) threw a career-high seven innings, giving up five hits and three runs.
TCU will face No.4 Oklahoma State (37-19) in an elimination game on Friday at 3:15 p.m. CT on Big 12 Now ESPN+ with the winner playing Texas on Saturday at 9 a.m. CT on Big 12 Now on ESPN+.
