West Virginia’s 2022-23 Big 12 Athlete of the Year Nominees

The 2022-23 Big 12 Athlete of the Year nominees will be featured each day at 10 a.m. CT and 2 p.m. CT, listed in alphabetical order by school through Friday, July 28.

Each institution nominated one male and one female athlete of any classification that competed for their institution during the school year. Student-athletes were required to be in good academic standing and had to be from a league-sponsored sport.

The 10 schools that competed during the 2022-23 academic year are eligible.

The winners will be announced Monday, July 31.

This afternoon’s featured candidates are West Virginia’s JJ Wetherholt and Ceili McCabe.

West Virginia Male Athlete of the Year Candidate
JJ Wetherholt, Baseball, Second Baseman

Accomplishments
  • 2023 Big 12 Player of the Year and an All-Big 12 First Team member.
  • Helped guide West Virginia to its first Big 12 baseball regular season title in program history.
  • Was a unanimous First Team All-American
  • Led Division I with a .449 batting average.
  • First Team College Sports Communicators Academic All-American.

Ceili McCabe, Cross Country and Track and Field
Jr., Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada
Accomplishments
  • 2022 Big 12 Women’s Cross Country Runner of the Year and an All-Big 12 First Team member.
  • A cross country First Team All-American and was named the Mid-Atlantic Region Athlete of the Year.
  • An Outdoor Women’s Track and Field All-American (3,000-meter steeplechase) and an Indoor All-American in the 3,000-meter run.
  • USTFCCCA All-Academic Team for cross country and CSC Academic All-District Team for track and field.
  • Academic All-Big 12 First Team in both sports.
