Iowa State’s MJ Gaitan was tabbed as Big 12 Wrestler of the Week by the league’s coaches. The junior recorded the biggest win of his career after taking down No. 2 Patrick Kennedy of Iowa in a 9-8 decision in the Cyclone-Hawk dual.
Gaitan recorded two takedowns through the first two periods, with an 8-5 lead heading into the third round. Forced into a tie breaker, the 174-pound junior rode out the clock to propel ISU to a 20-14 victory over in-state rival No. 1 Iowa for the first time since 2004.
Iowa State heads to its next match at the Cliff Keen Invitational in Las Vegas beginning on Friday, Dec. 5.
