ISU’s Roomes, UT’s Davis Garner Athlete of the Week Awards

Iowa State’s Roshon Roomes and Texas’ Tara Davis collected Big 12 Outdoor Track & Field Athlete of the Week accolades after their standout performances last week.

Roomes was a member of all three of Iowa State’s victorious relay teams at the Drake Relays over the weekend, helping the ISU men defend their title in the Relays Cup competition. The highlight of the weekend came in the 4x800m relay, of which Roomes ran the third leg and split 1:47.88 to help ISU to a school record and Drake Relays record 7:12.57, which is also the No. 5 mark in collegiate history in the event and the fastest collegiate 4x800 run since 2011. Roomes and Iowa State became the first team since Kansas in 1954 to win the sprint medley relay, 4x800m relay and distance medley relay at the same Drake Relays. The senior was named the Drake Relays Men’s Most Outstanding Performer.

Davis ran a lifetime-best 12.61 (+2.6) in the 100-meter hurdles at the LSU Alumni Gold on Saturday. As a wind-aided mark, it was the fastest all-conditions time in Texas history. The time helped Davis climb to No. 2 on the NCAA leaderboard this season, and it gave her possession of two top-two NCAA marks this season when coupled with her world-leading long jump mark, which set a collegiate record earlier this year.

This is the second honor this season for Davis and the first for Roomes.
