ARLINGTON, Texas – No. 7 Kansas State (29-28) eliminated No. 2 Texas Tech (37-20) 6-5 in 11 innings in game 10 of the 2022 Phillips 66 Big 12 Championship at Globe Life Field. The Wildcats advance to the semifinal for the first time since 2011.
After a scoreless first inning, K-State got on the board first with a Nick Goodwin homerun. Justin Mitchell scored Cole Johnson and Kaelen Culpepper on a two-RBI single to extend the lead to 3-0.
The Red Raiders responded in the fourth inning, scoring Cole Stilwell on a one-RBI sacrifice fly by Ty Coleman to cut the Wildcat lead to 3-1.
In the sixth inning, TTU’s Coleman evened the score with a two-RBI double. Coleman later scored on a fielder’s choice for a 4-3 Texas Tech lead.
K-State quickly knotted the score at 4-4 with a one-RBI single from Brady Day in the seventh inning.
The Red Raiders reclaimed their lead when Dillon Carter drove in Parker Kelly on a one-RBI single.
A wild pitch in the ninth walked in Kansas State’s Day to tie the game once again at 5-5.
Freshman Ty Ruhl held the Red Raiders at five runs to send the game into its tenth inning, marking the first Big 12 Championship game to enter extra innings since 2019.
The Wildcats broke the deadlock in the eleventh inning when Josh Nicoloff brought Johnson across home with a sacrifice bunt. Junior Dylan Phillips pitched a scoreless inning to put away the game for Kansas State.
Ruhl (W, 5-2) gets the relief win for K-State, pitching a season-high 3.2 shutout innings and fanning four batters. Phillips earns his eighth save of the year.
Sophomore Brandon Beckel (L, 0-1) threw one inning, giving up one unearned run.
Kansas State advances to the semifinal to face No. 3 Oklahoma (35-20) on Saturday at 12:30 p.m. CT on Big 12 Now ESPN+. With a win, K-State would face Oklahoma again later in the day for a chance to advance to the title game.
