Texas and Texas Tech Share Athletes of the Week

The Longhorn women’s 4x100 relay team, Texas’ Leo Neugebauer, and Texas Tech’s Terrence Jones claimed the third set of Big 12 Outdoor Track and Field weekly awards.

Julien Alfred, Ezinne Abba, Rhasidat Adeleke and Kevona Davis posted the NCAA’s all-time fastest 42.00 seconds in the 4x100 relay at the Texas Relays. The previous record holder, LSU, set the record in 2018 (42.05 seconds) and held the top three times before the Longhorns claimed the NCAA-leading record. The quartet’s time also ranks as the second-best in the world this season.

Neugebauer broke an almost 17-year-old Texas Relays decathlon record of 8,465 points, which was set by former Longhorn Trey Hardee. The junior’s 8,478 points place him as the all-time decathlon performer in program history and No. 5 in the NCAA record book. He posted personal bests in the 100-meter (10.75), shot put (16.66m), 110-meter hurdles (14.33) and pole vault (5.10m). The German native’s score ranks in the top 10 in his home country and is No. 2 in the 2023 world rankings.

In his season opener, Jones finished first in the 200-meter run at the Texas Relays running the event in 20.05 seconds. It was the first time the junior ran the 200-meters since 2021. In route to collecting the No. 1 time in the world this season, he also claimed the meet record, the No. 2 best time in his native country of Bahamas and the fifth-best in Tech history.
