Iowa State Men, Texas Women Win Big 12 Indoor T&F Championship

After a full two days of competition, the Iowa State men and the Texas women were crowned the 2020 Big 12 Indoor Track & Field Team Champions. The Longhorns set a Big 12 record with 180.33 total team points, while the Cyclones took their first team indoor title in Conference history.
 
An additional 27 individual event winners rounded out the second and final day of the Championship, highlighted by Texas sprinter Julien Alfred who broke a 16-year old Big 12 record in the women’s 60-meter dash with a time of 7.15 seconds.
 
Iowa State’s Edwin Kurgat received Men’s High Point honors after totaling 26 points on the weekend, while there was a four-way tie for the Women’s award as Iowa State’s Cailie Logue, Texas’ Julien Alfred and Kathryn Gillespie and Texas Tech’s Ruth Usoro each tallied 20 points.
 
Day two kicked off with a pair of field event gold medalists in Oklahoma's Lavinja Jurgens jumping a 1.82-meter (5' 11.50") high jump and Texas’ Elena Bruckner throwing a Big 12 season-best 16.82-meter (55’ 2.25”) shot put. The Longhorns kept it rolling with O’Brien Wasome collecting his second title of the Championship in the men’s triple jump, going 16.12 meters (52’ 10.75”).
 
In the first running events of the day, Texas Tech’s Gabrielle McDonald won the women’s 60-meter hurdles in 8.04 seconds, while UT’s John Burt took the title for the men with a time of 7.71 seconds. Alfred set the meet and facility record in the women’s 60-meter dash before Oklahoma’s Jackson Webb pulled an upset on the men’s side in 6.69 seconds.
 
As the distance events got underway, the Longhorn women picked up another victory in the mile with Kathryn Gillespie’s school-record 4:36.89 time, while Tech added 10 points with Takieddine Hedeilli’s 4:13.27 win. In the 600-yard runs, UT’s Brooke Jaworski grabbed the women’s crown in 1:19.14, while Iowa State’s Roshon Roomes defended his title in 1:08.66.
 
Kennedy Simon set the nation’s leading time in the women’s 400 meters, running a 51.21 for another Longhorns victory, while teammate Jonathan Jones claimed the men’s race with a 45.90 split. K-State’s Kassidy Johnson ran a 2:44.89 in the women’s 1,000 meters and Hedeilli collected his second win of the day for Tech on the men’s side with a 2:26.67 time.
 
Meanwhile, Texas freshman Leo Neugebauer wrapped up his collegiate heptathlon debut with a win in the event, totaling 5,848 points. UT’s Gillespie and ISU’s Roomes both doubled up as champions with wins in the 800 meters in 2:06.33 and 1:48.39, respectively.
 
Alfred followed suit, claiming her second title of the day in the women’s 200 meters in 23.02 seconds. She is the first woman to sweep the 60 and the 200 at the Big 12 Indoor Championship since UT’s Marshevet Hooker in 2006. Another Longhorn earned victory in the men’s 200, as Micaiah Harris went 20.65 seconds for the title.
 
As the afternoon field events concluded, it was K-State’s Tejaswin Shankar taking the men’s high jump crown in back-to-back years with a 2.23m (7’ 3.75”) leap and the nation’s top shot putter Adrian Piperi of Texas extending his collegiate lead with a 20.98m (68’ 10.00”) toss for his third indoor shot put Conference title in a row. Ruth Usoro of Texas Tech won the women’s triple jump with a 13.31m (43’ 8.00”) mark for her second first-place finish of the Championship.
 
In the final distance races of the meet, ISU’s Logue and Kurgat both garnered their second wins of the weekend, taking the 3K/5K double after 9:28.88 and 8:10.48 marks in the 3,000 meters.
 
To cap things off, the TCU men and Texas women won the 4x400-meter relays in 3:06.90 and 3:32.64, respectively.
 
The NCAA Indoor Championships are scheduled for March 13-14 in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Announcement of the Division I qualifiers is set to be released on Tuesday, February 26.
