OU Advances to First Phillips 66 Big 12 Baseball Championship Final Since 2013

ARLINGTON, Texas— No. 3 Oklahoma (36-20) fended off No. 7 Kansas State (29-29) 4-3 in game 11 of the Phillips 66 Big 12 Championship at Globe Life Field.

Oklahoma struck first in the bottom of the opening inning with Tanner Tredaway hitting an RBI-single to move Peyton Graham past home plate.

Kansas State quickly reacted in the top of the second inning with a single from Justin Mitchell that was accompanied by a throwing error to push Cole Johnson across the plate. Mitchell strengthened his multi-hit game streak to 15 after going 2-for-3 against OU.

The third and fourth innings were silent for both the Wildcats and Sooners.

Kansas State’s Cash Rugely disrupted the silence with an RBI single that propelled the Wildcats to a 2-1 edge in the fifth inning. After pitching five innings and striking out five Sooners, Griffin Hassall exited the mound.

In the bottom of the sixth inning, OU reclaimed the lead, 3-2, with a two-RBI double supplied by Jimmy Crooks. The Sooners added to their lead with Graham’s second home run in the Championship and fifth of his career in Globe Life Field.

OU’s David Sandlin stepped off the mound after a career-high 10 strikeouts in 7.0 innings pitched. Sandlin joined teammate Jake Bennett with double-digit strikeouts in consecutive Big 12 Championship games.

The Wildcats cut the deficit to 4-3 in the eighth inning with an RBI single sent to the left side by Johnson. Dylan Phillips retired the first three OU batters in the bottom of the eighth.

A groundout and two strikeouts in the top of the ninth inning secured OU the 4-3 win and a spot in the title game.

Oklahoma will make its first appearance in the Big 12 Championship Final for the first time since 2013 and will face the winner of No. 4 Oklahoma State vs. No. 5 Texas. The first pitch for the Championship Final is set for 5 p.m. CT on Sunday, May 29 on ESPNU.
